The 3D Globe plot type is used to visualize geographic data on a worldwide or country-wide scale. You can visualize single points or a heatmap. It is a very effective visualization on both desktop and VR.
For city-wide or street level visualizations, 2D Maps may lead to more insightful visualizations.
Required Features and Dimensions
The 3D Globe plot type requires a feature that represents longitude mapped to X and a feature that represents latitude mapped to Y. The coordinates must be in the form of Decimal Degrees (DD), where positive latitudes indicate north of the equator and positive longitudes indicate east of the Prime Meridian – coordinates in other formats must be converted before loading the dataset.
3D Globe settings, found on the input tab of the Mapping panel, allow you to customize your globe:
- Globe style – Changes the visual theme of the globe
- Latitude/Longitude – Shows/hides latitude and longitude lines
- Country labels – Adds names for large countries
- Country outlines – Shows/hides outlines for large countries. Note: these outlines are stylistic and are not meant to be precise
- Region Selection – Select a region on the globe and load the correspondent 2D maps
- Heatmap – Superimpose a heatmap on the globe.
- Heatmap Resolution – Determines the granularity of the heatmap visualization. A higher resolution will result in a more detailed representation of the data density but will take longer to generate than a lower resolution.
- Create Feature – This option creates a new feature and adds it to the dataset. Each record in the newly created feature corresponds to a (0-1) normalized value representing the density of data at the geographical location of a given data point in a heatmap visualization.
