The Legend Panel shows you what each color, shape, or group represents in your visualization.
It is also a useful way to filter your visualization by showing and hiding specific categories and bins. The number of visible points and total points can be found in the bar just below the legend panel.
Legend Settings
The Options menu ( ) in the top right of the Legend Panel allows you to edit various Legend display settings.
You can show or hide the Distribution Info, which will display a visual breakout of how data is distributed within each category or bin contained in the feature that is mapped. This is hidden by default.
You can show or hide the number of points in each category and show either the number of points or percentage of points in each category.
For each of Color, Shape and Group By, you can change how the list is sorted:
- Number of points in the Denominator (default)
- Number of points in the Numerator
- Alphabetically
This is also where you can reset all changes to show all points again.
Color
The Color section in the Legend Panel explains what each color represents when a feature is mapped to the Color dimension. It is also a useful way to filter your visualization by showing and hiding specific categories and bins or by filtering out a range of values.
Color Bins
When the Color option is set to Color Bins, a list of all colors currently shown on the plot will display. This section shows every category contained in features with 16 or fewer categories, or the 15 biggest categories plus an “Other” category for features with many categories. The list is ordered by the number of points in each category by default, with the “Other” category at the end of the list regardless of size.
Each category has an icon showing its color on the left and followed by the name of the data points that category represents. Hovering over the color icon or category will display the number of visible points out of the total number of points in the dataset for this category.
The list is interactive and is used to quickly show or hide particular bins:
- Click on the color icon or name of the category to isolate that category and hide others. Click that same category again to reset and show all colors.
- Click on other color icons or names to make other categories visible once again.
If you've hidden particular categories, you can show all Colors again by clicking the Legend menu at the top right of the Legend panel, navigating to Color, and clicking Reset.
Additionally, if you've selected Distribution Info to be shown (see above), a color bar will display at the top of the Color section. This color bar shows the distribution for each category or bin contained in the feature that is mapped to color. Each segment corresponds to a category shown below the color bar, and the size of each segment corresponds to the percentage of points which are members of that category.
Color Gradient
When the Color option is set to Color Gradient, you will see a color distribution at the top of the Color section with two sliders that can be moved horizontally. These allow you to filter out points above or below the two sliders.
The Details section shows statistics for the feature currently mapped to Color.
Color Gradients can be reset the same way as Color Bins, by clicking the Reset button in the Color section of the Legend menu.
Shape
The Shape section in the Legend Panel explains what each shape represents when a feature is mapped to the Shape dimension. It is also a useful way to filter your visualization by showing and hiding specific categories and bins.
This section shows every category contained in features with 6 or fewer categories, or the 5 biggest categories plus an “Other” category for features with many categories. The list is ordered by the number of points in each category by default, with the “Other” category at the end of the list regardless of size. Each category has an icon showing its shape on the left followed by the name of the category that the shape represents. Hovering over the shape icon or category will display the number of visible points out of the total number of points in the dataset for this category.
The list is interactive and is used to quickly show or hide particular bins:
- Click on the shape icon or name of the category to isolate that category and hide others. Click that same category again to reset and show all shapes.
- Click on other shape icons or names to make other categories visible once again.
You can show all Shapes again by clicking the Reset button in the Shape section of the Legend menu.
Group By
The Group By section in the Legend Panel shows which categories that belong to the feature mapped to the Group By dimension. It is also a useful way to filter your visualization by showing and hiding specific categories and bins.
This section shows every category contained in the feature. The list is ordered by the number of points in each category by default. Each category has an icon on the left followed by the name of the category. Hovering over the icon or category will display the number of visible points out of the total number of points in the dataset for this category.
The list is interactive and is used to quickly show or hide particular bins:
- Click on the icon or name of the category to isolate that category and hide others. Click that same category again to reset and show all groups.
- Click on other icons or names to make other categories visible once again.
You can show all categories again by clicking the Reset button in the Group By section of the Legend menu.
